Open Letter to Mr. Paul Street
Hello, Mr. Street.
In opening your article, "Bill Cosby and White America," you
slant and spin Mr. Cosby's message in accordance with your own denial.
By refusing to recognize a problem, you put remedy out of reach. You began,
"
Bill Cosby's decision to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Brown
v. Board of Education decision by proclaiming that poor black people deserve
their fate at the bottom of America's steep socioeconomic pyramid ..."
Mr. Cosby has not said or proclaimed that "... poor black people
deserve their fate at the bottom of America's steep socioeconomic pyramid
..."
I very strongly feel that barriers to equal treatment need to be addressed
and removed, but in addition we people of color most definitely can help
our cause by working together to improve language and communication and
levels of morals and ethics among our Brothers and Sisters.
Yes, as a culture, many of our woes are brought upon us externally, however,
we need to stand now and muscle up together ... like the Jamaicans, the
Chinese, the Irish and any and every formerly oppressed minority.
Your mischaracterization of Cosby's message serves to short circuit and
obfuscate the truth here. I respectfully submit to you that you and those
who emotionally (but not logically) reject (through mischaracterization)
Mr. Cosby's message are the ones who actually serve to perpetuate the
oppressed and disadvantaged condition of African Americans today.
Sincerely
jivajiva (President Club Services)
