ZEN and TOMORROW
For You
Beginners don't know what to
ask.
We are all beginners.
Experts are relatives
Like Everyone Else
jiva
You're going to have to forgive me. This machine is literally a prosthesis
to me. It should be to you too. I want to say I am among the first of
the Digital Police.
One fine day, I'll be virtually
knocking, and I'll be saying:
"It is a violation of
LAW not to be on line, Mr. Joseph Jones Sr.
Of 1522 Van Dyke!
You have the duty to talk all you want to.
All the time.
You are free free ...
and I'd be the digital enforcer...
You flew away
like a kite ...
...
And maybe
Someday you will see ...
It gets so lonely
Being Free
Steve Miller Band
This dialog is important. Like last night's A&E ... "Guess What?
The Future Just Happened."
is actually already a matter
for the past.
To be forgotten ...
Not long from tomorrow, this
talk of backups, hard drives and crashes will be uniquely flavorful as
nostalgia and as unnecessary as hiccups about the old Blacksmith's shop
... And the "they?" They'll be talking talk as incomprehensible
to us as this Digital Diary would be to the 1880s.
But here is a statement of
record. The crazy stuff we're doing today ... at these steam radiators
chugging away on our desks; old ... yet still ahead and ahead...
The
Problem with Rapid Duplicate Mouse Clicks or:
Learn the Difference Between an Application and a File
Know Where You are
Someone asked if it is likely
that by waiting ... eventually accumulated mouse clicks or repeated instruction
would execute ... one by one ... in reverse order.
Will this
person please stand up?
To know
to ask is part of The Way.
Then the back button on an
Explorer might walk us back back back one step at a time, this friend
speculated.
Onward! (In Reverse) To that
point where we think we'll be sure.
Uh Uh. Wrong
Answer
Wrong falutin ' answer. One
click's instructions will soon conflict with another's and at best, the
problem is ignored.
But ... click click click on
the close document close application close button for
... example ...
soon easily leads to conflict.
You must know where you are
in relation to your Dell or Aptiva (Brand Names, I think) Steam Radiator
sitting before you now.
What's the machine trying to
do?
Only what you tell it.
Is it broken?
It's not broken, but it is
easy to give conflicting instructions.
Curiosity isn't good with impetuosity
... even though this used to lead to good creativity, the tools here ...
the interface is different.
Create? Yes! Where will you
Go Today? Yes! More than ever. But the tools ... these eloquent
relatively (to the future) biplane kind of tools are different.
I hated taking up a pen, then
a typewriter then an IBM Selectric, now this.
The VA made me do it. And I
thank them.
Click Click Click! One thing
you need to know:
The Difference Between an Application and a File
If the application
is the car on the highway,
Then the files
would be maybe ... the passengers in that car.
Our sample driver gets in his
car (opens an application ... like a word processing application:
Microsoft Word, or Corel Word Perfect ...each well known product is an
Example of an application
... or ... program, "they" teach us to say sometimes.
Application
equals = Program
Your on line interaction with
someone or something is a program ... or series of instructions
.. At work.
Within this program ... car
... application ... you load what?
A
File
Your file. Might be
your grocery list file within the application Word Perfect, for
example. The files do have a physical location ... usually on your
Hard Drive for example ... but not necessarily there ... a file
may be carried on a floppy for instance, where you may have copied it
to:
Floppy Drive A, for example.
Or a zip drive, or a tape drive ... Or ... on a network ... someone else's
Hard Drive.
Files may even be copied
into memory ... in fact, they exist only in memory until such a time when
they are saved ... written to disk. Making a "permanent" record
on whatever medium (HD, Floppy ... what ever)
but I'd like the point here
to be:
That File operates in the environment
of its parent APPLICATION. Windows Users, Apple Users, you may close a
FILE, within an application,
(now we're talking) ...
you can close an application
that has a file open within ... like a grocery list file in the word processor
application ... (by open I mean held in RAM ... subject to loss with out
that imperishable (hopefully) write to disk (save).
You can close an application
with a file open in it.
You can close a file within
an application ...
in which case the application
stays open too ...
on your screen usually and presenting an appropriate interface for you
to interact with.
Like Word Perfect (My favorite).
Can you tell the Word Perfect
People from the Word people?
Now that you know what you
didn't know?
You have two files open within
one application:
One file is your grocery list.
Another file is the Sweet Heart Letter you've been working on to give
your wife.
A click which does not get
results should not result in more clicks. Sometimes, mouse clicks do nothing
noticeable ... or result in actions you might see only if you happened
to be looking. It helps a lot to recognize this.
You don't have to touch type
... but the screen is your beloved Radiator's way of giving feedback to
you. You need to look at the screen ... or somehow perceive the machines
reaction to your input.
Clickety clickety click click
click. There. Nothing's happened.
Nothing indeed
